Verethragna is a Heretic God in the series Campione.

Appearance[]

Verethragna had the appearance of a 15-year-old boy with blue hair and a small tattoo on his forehead. His face was very delicate and handsome, with a kind of fleeting charm. However, he could assume the form of any of his ten incarnations/Authorities, his normal form being that of the Youth incarnation. In his first meeting with Godou, he wore a ragged coat.

Personality[]

Verethragna is a battle-loving god who is willing to do anything to find a worthy opponent. He even went as far as to revive Melqart just so he could fight him. He further gave one of his incarnations to Godou to test him and strengthen his opposition.

In the Light Novels, prior to regaining his memories, Verethragna was a kind and gentle figure who loved sports and competing against others of worthy skill. After he regained his memories, he became very arrogant and contemptuous of others. After his second advent, Verethragna demonstrates a more friendly side of his personality to both Godou and Erica. He is even willing to bestow a blessing on their unborn child.

Verethragna also dislikes to be ordered around. He described Zurvan and the Divine sword of salvation to be nagging him for every single thing is extremely irritable. He's willing to go as far as killing Zurvan for it. However, this might be intentional since Zurvan must be dead for him to spare Kusanagi Godou without any consequences.

History[]

Sometime in the past, the god Mithras became separated into the aspects of Verethragna, who embodied his aspect as a war god, and Mithras, god of light and order.

In the modern era, Verethragna battled against Melqart. In the Light Novel, this was witnessed by Lucretia Zola early in the story. According to Verethragna, Melqart was injured during their last confrontation and his wounds had still not healed. Later, Verethragna was defeated by Godou Kusanagi.

In the light novel version, Verethragna lost his memory in the battle, with most of his Authorities being scattered around the island. He befriended Godou, and (at his request of him) used Prometheus' Grimoire to defeat one of his own avatars, restoring some of his power. Later, Godou Kusanagi stole the power of the White Stallion with the Prometheus' Grimoire. He was forgiven by Verethragna for entertaining him earlier in the story, but warned that the next time he would be punished.

Anime and Light Novel Differences[]

In the Light Novel, Godou Kusanagi defeated Verethragna using the power of the White Stallion, while in the anime, Godou used the White Stallion as a distraction so that he could use Prometheus' Grimoire to steal Verethragna's Golden Sword and subsequently used it to kill him.

Powers & Abilities[]

Verethragna is a very powerful warlord and has 10 different incarnations, each with its own unique power, making him extremely versatile in battle. He can switch between them in order to wield the Authority needed at that time.

Immense magical energy: As a god, Verethragna possesses an incredible amount of magical energy within his body.

Superhuman Strength: Despite his small frame, Verethragna's base strength without using his incarnations is enough to trigger Godou's bull. Even with his strength boosted by [Bull] Godou still describes the god's arm strength as immense. His hand sword can easily stab through the godslayer's body.

Superhuman Stamina: Due to his divine physique, Verethragna possesses an immense amount of stamina as he can fight a very long battle without showing any sign of fatigue. He's capable of pitching over a hundred powerful fastballs without breaking a sweat.

Superhuman Speed: Verethragna is extremely quick in combat. He can follow Godou's [Raptor] movement and react accordingly. He's also a user of Godspeed.

Superhuman Durability: As a god of steel, Verethragna is extremely durable and can take a lot of punishment from his enemy. He survives Godou's kick and Lancelot's strike with minimal damage.

Superhuman Regeneration: Verethragna's natural healing capability is great enough to regrow his limbs instantly without using his respective authority.

Expert Martial artists: As a god of war, he's an expert in unarmed combat. Godou describes his prowess in battle as an unstoppable wave of punch.

Expert Swordsmanships: Veretragna is immensely skilled with swords. He's capable of toying with Erica Blandeli, a talented swordswoman with a single tree branch. His causal swing can create a strong gust of wind.

Expert Marksmanship: Verethragna demonstrates a strong aptitude toward projectile weapons where he's shown to be even more superior to Yukino as a wielder of Rama's divine bow and arrow.

Talent in sports: As a god of victory, Verethragna is extremely talented in any kind of competition. He's capable of overwhelming Godou in baseball despite his inexperience in this field. He's also a quick learner too.

Spiritual Sight: As a possessor of the sword of wisdom, Verethragna possess an eye of truth where he can discern all kind of truth. He can take a glance at a god or divine construct and thoroughly understand their true nature, even an unorthodox power created from a mixed divinity couldn't escape his discerning eyes. His control of it seems to be superior to Yuri's.

Authority of Victory - Verethragna's authority[]

According to his legend, Verethragna is a god of victories with ten incarnations. This power allows him to be an extremely versatile and powerful god in combat.

As a god and the original owner of the authority, his powers are several levels higher than the usurped version of Kusanagi Godou called The Persian Warlord. Verethragna doesn't have any activation conditions or limited usage per day. Unlike The Persian Warlord, his incarnations are considered as a separate authority rather than one authority with several manifestations. It also has different ways of channeling its power. Godou's authority grants him superhuman ability according to the incarnation while retaining the human body. Verethragna's authority will change his form into a divine beast instead. However, Verethragna seems to possess an ability to draw out its power while retaining his human form.

Verethragna is capable of summoning his avatar as a separate entity and riding them as a steed while manipulating their special quality in his human form.

His individual incarnations also possess more power than Godou's incarnations. For example, Verethragna's [Gale] can be used offensively while Godou's can't. His [youth] is capable of granting divine protection and dominating people's will without any physical requirements. On the contrary, Godou needs to bestow his protection via physical means and he can't control the receiver's mind.

While his version is more powerful, it is less flexible than Kusanagi Godou's version. Verethragna can't dual-activate his authority or merge them together.

Gale
2Gale (Wind)
Allowed him to wield the power of Wind. Also allowed him to hear and then teleport to a person who knows his face and is crying for help. With it, he could travel anywhere in the world, even between the Netherworld and the world of the living. It can between interstices of time and space to reach the temple of infinite time. Verethragna was a god who had also dominated over kings, and under the widespread worship of the Parthian and Sassanid Empires, he became a patron saint of the people. The symbol that best represented him was the wind, where he would transform into a gust of wind to protect people, and travelers would often recite prayers to or leave small figures of him in the street to pray for a safe journey. Veretharagna can use this authority to perform an instant teleportation at will. It also transforms Veretharagna into a storm that rivals Melqart's wind. Verethragna can also use this avatar as a defensive measure where he turns intangible and even a sword slash from the divine sword of salvation can't even graze him.
Bull
2Bull
Granted immense strength, rivaling that of Hercules due to Verethragna often being associated with him, with bulls symbolizing strength. When activated, he transforms into a golden bull with immense strength.
White Stallion
2White Stallion
This represents his relationship to the sun since Verethragna's master Mithras, like Apollo, was said to have carried the sun across the sky in a horse-drawn chariot. Allowed him to summon a horse that carries the Sun's power. It is easily the strongest offensive Authority he has in his arsenal.
Camel
2Camel
It improves the user's close-combat ability; grants him incredible leg strength, detains the sensation of pain, and grants extraordinary endurance, likely due to camels being animals with great durability.
Boar
2Boar
Represents his aspect as a war god that allows him to summon a giant boar Divine Beast that tramples everything in its path. When activated, he transforms into a giant boar with immense strength while retaining his intelligence.

Incantations:

"Thus speaketh Lord Mithra……. The sinful shall be met with justice. May spines be crushed, may bones be broken, tendons torn, hair brains and blood mingled and trampled together with the earth. The one unblunted and unapproachable! Oath breaking sinners be purged by the iron hammer of justice! "

"For one cannot come near you with ease! Punish him for breaking the contract!"

Youth
2Youth
Represents his aspect as the 15 year old youth who was the hero and the saint who watches over and protects the people. Gives him the ability to grant divine protection to those who swear loyalty to the user, giving them the same inexhaustible vitality of a Campione as well as granting an explosive increase in magical and spiritual power. But in the process of wearing the protection, intense pain would be felt by the recipient Also allows Verethragna to give anyone who sees him as a hero commands that cannot be disobeyed. However, if they no longer view him as a hero, then they can break free from his control. At its peak, Verethragna can command a non-sentient object, such as a tree to his will.
Raptor
Bird (Raptor)
Allows him to move at god-speed, possibly due to raptors being seen as the swiftest animals on the planet.
Ram
2Ram
Allows the user to be resurrected from near-death injuries. However, an instant death would prove it useless. While Verethragna was a god of victory, he was also a defender of kingship, which the ram possesses the deepest relationship with. In ancient times when herding could be equated with wealth, the sheep, able to grow quickly and reproduce with abundance, was a symbol of vitality and prosperity. Thus, the power to represent vitality was a perfect representation of the sheep that exhibited these traits. He can use this incarnation to recreate his body from ashes. His version is superior to Godou's. He can maintain his consciousness after using this form.
Goat
2Goat

This incarnation grants him the power to control thunder. The reason for this is that since ancient times, the goat and other horned animals were considered to be sacred beasts that symbolized great magical power, as horns have been the symbol of special magical power since ancient times. Kings and priests often wore hats or helmets with horns to show that the wearer possessed power. Nomadic Indo-European tribes were also thought to have made analogies comparing the goat to lightning. The Greek god of the heavens Zeus was also intimately linked to the Goat, and the connection between him and Verethragna is further strengthened when considering that Verethragna was often equated to Heracles, the son of Zeus. He also shares close ties to the thunder god Indra.

When activated He transforms into a goat with the ability to release lightning from its horns. In his human form, Verethragna can release a powerful thunder from his hand. It's also possible to create a lightning storm that releases a thousand raging thunderbolts that are even more powerful than the boosted lightning of salvation.

Incantations:

"……O lightning. I am the conqueror who vanquished a thousand with a hundred. Release bright and shining brilliance, and grant me divine power! "

Warrior
2Warrior
Also a representation of his aspect as a war god that subjugated foreign deities. Summons a golden sword which negates divinity, and the power of any Authorities they may possess. However, it requires knowledge of the target god to use. Dual wielding is also possible for two different gods but leaves him significantly drained as when he did against Melqart and the flames of Prometheus. In Campione EX, Verethragna created three different swords for each authorities he wished to negate. One for his own [Ten incarnations], Another for the Divine sword of salvation and Zurvan's authority. His sword is proven to be powerful enough to slay a deity as he killed Zurvan with a single stab.

An authority that is composed of multiple authorities is hard for Verethragna to seal. However, he doesn't seem to be troubled by this. It is indicated that he can seal it given enough time to forge a sword for this.

Incantations:

"I am the one who smash every obstacle. Kusanagi Godou, even the authority that you usurped from me──I will smash it. With the sword of wisdom, I will cut apart my own divine power"

"You took possession of a war god’s power by usurpation. A god of victory, a god who bring justice, a god who guides, a powerful god, a righteous god, a protector god, a reincarnating god. You have grasped all the ten aspects of I, Verethragna. In that case I shall announce. I will seal everything."

Besides his ten incarnations, Verethragna was also a god of the sun, and the dawning of a new day would restore his strength and energy to its peak.

Former Abilities as King of The End[]

As the successor of Mithras, Verethragna acts as King of The End under the guidance of Zurvan. During this time, he gains a backup from destiny. These boons allow him to perform a feat several times higher than normal gods.

Divine sword of salvation: Inheriting it from King of the end Mithras. Veretharagna can create [White star] and [Divine lightning of salvation]. He can rain down several hundred million during his use. However, his usage isn't as impressive as Rama, since he lacks experience controlling the sword. At the end of Campione EX, He relinquished this sword along with the title of devil king exterminator.

The great ritual of the Old Covenant: After Zurvan bestows this authority to Veretharagna. His power will rise proportionally to the amount of godslayers that exist in the world. When activated, his body will continuously release divine lightning in a random direction similar to Rama. His overall ability will be enhanced relative to the amount of godslayers that exist in the world. After he killed Zurvan, he presumably lost it.

However, Verethragna detests this blessing since it tries to control his body and his authority for the sake of eliminating godslayers. Unlike, Rama and Mithras, he eventually rebelled against his partons, Zurvan after an interval created by an authority of anti-destiny. Consequently, this results in his release from his fate as King of The End.

Trivia[]
